THE STORY

For nearly 20 years I lived alone in a 120 year old redwood cabin in the woods on a flowing creek.

This collection of work was grown during the pandemic, when I was taking daily walks in the forest.

THE INSPIRATION

My paintings began to look like what I was immersed in every day - the patterns and textures of the changing light coming through the layers of branches and leaves.

I was exploring and expressing the themes of life and its cycles of growth and decay. And nature was my medicine and my teacher, as the world got scary and loved ones died during this time.

THE WORK

I included collaged pages from things I was reading, and each painting's title came from a bit of text that emerged through the layers.

The trees surrounding me filled my work, and skulls as I contemplated the fragility of human life, and the growth that came from death and endings.

Later, more florals began to emerge, as we were emerging from lockdown, and began to shifting from languishing to flourishing.

A Part of Me

My little redwood cabin in the woods was the longest home I’vd ever lived in. That land has become such an extension of me- it’s in my art, my nervous system, my soul. I think it’s the longest most intimate relationship I’ve ever had.

I wrote this poem the day after I moved. All of the photos and videos have been taken with my phone on my daily walks over my past few years there.

This is my love letter to that place, and my way of saying goodbye, and thank you.
